Comprehensive guide to using retail security gates
September 21, 2025·Vista EAS
Operational milestones
A security gate has predictable inflection points. Knowing what to do at each one separates a store that runs cleanly from one that quietly accumulates problems.
Day one
Tag everything in the priority categories — even mannequin display items. Brief every cashier on the deactivation pad and the audible signal codes.
After the first false alarm
Most likely cause is a non-deactivated label leaving in a returned bag. Walk the customer back, apologise, deactivate. Record the cause.
After the first apprehension
This is when staff learn the system actually works. Use the moment to retrain, but never publicise the catch in a way that targets the offender.
After one year
- Recalibrate sensitivity against the noise survey.
- Replace deactivator pads if alarms-after-pay-point exceed 1%.
- Audit label inventory — leakage indicates a process gap.
Vista EAS schedules an annual review with each maintenance contract.
