Maintaining a retail security gate — extending its lifespan
Six steps to a long-lived gate
A retail security gate is a piece of industrial electronics that lives in one of the harshest environments in the building — the entrance. Heat, dust, vibration and the occasional shopping trolley impact all degrade it quietly. A simple maintenance schedule extends life from a typical seven years to twelve or more.
Quarterly cleaning
Wipe panels with a microfibre cloth and isopropyl alcohol. Vacuum the base where dust collects around the antenna board. Never use ammonia-based cleaners on acrylic.
Annual recalibration
Re-run the sensitivity sweep with a known-good tag. Document the reading.
Firmware updates
Apply controller firmware updates within a month of release — vendors typically address EMI handling and false-alarm filtering.
- Bolt torque check annually.
- Cable strain inspection every six months.
- Deactivator pad output measured semi-annually.
Vista EAS offers a fixed-fee maintenance plan covering all six items.
