The retail anti-theft security gate
What a retail anti-theft gate actually is
An anti-theft gate, formally called an electronic article surveillance system, is a pair of antennas at a store exit that detect active tags or labels passing through a defined field. When a tag is detected, the gate triggers an audible and visual alarm.
How the field works
Two technologies dominate. RF 8.2 MHz systems sweep a narrow frequency band; tags resonate when their LC circuit matches. AM 58 kHz systems pulse a magnetic field; tags ring back at a precise audio frequency that the receiver listens for in the silence between pulses.
Form factors available
- Pedestal pairs — the classic visible deterrent
- Slim acrylic gates for premium retail
- In-floor concealed antennas where aesthetics dominate
- Overhead bar antennas for ultra-wide entrances
Questions to ask before buying
